Editor's Review:

There are a couple of popular short paperbacks in this category on golfing fundamentals written by golfing mentors.  Ben Hogan's 5 Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf has achieved popularity by being an easy guide for the beginner.  It is clearly written and covers the golfing fundamentals by way of short chapters with clear illustrations.  The idea is to go back to basics and break the golf lesson down to five easy sections.  In this modern age of technology this book may seem dated but there is an incredible amount of detail here that will help anyone with their technique and enjoyment of the game.

There are two types of readers when it comes to golf; the beginner and the experienced player who wants to improve.  Often golfers find they hit a wall with their training and cannot progress, or "lose their game".  This book can help both.  Beginners will find the amount of detail helpful in getting to grips with the basics, and those looking to improve may discover fundamental techniques in a way they never came across before which will fill in the gaps in their training.  Sometimes going back to basics is what you need.  Originally written as a series of Sports Illustrated articles in the 1950s, Ben Hogan's chapters advice still rings true today.  There are so many gimmicks and quick fix programmes about now that it can be easy to lose sight of the fundamental mechanics of hitting the ball into that hole.  It doesn't matter how much money you spend on your kit, what gadgets you use to measure your game because if you are doing it wrong you are just doing it wrong.  This is vintage advice at its best.

This highly popular book has stood the test of time.  To date of the writing of this verdict, 224 out of 278 Amazon customers rated this book 5 out of 5 stars.  Because its popularity stands before it, the book continues to satisfy the reader by being exactly what it seems to be and has helped many people over the years.  Ben Hogan was considered to be the best ball striker ever to play the game, and the best golfer of his time.  He developed a theory on the golf swing that won him many a success and is detailed for readers in this book.  Despite a near fatal road accident, he modified his game to overcome the resulting disability only to exceed to higher levels of success.

At under $8 from Amazon, this little paperback might be the best value purchase you make all year.  The exercises which are accompanied by detailed illustrations can be carried out with or without a club indoors, and taken to the course when you are ready.  Compared to other products in this category, it is a simple product with no added extras, but  despite that, it ranks highly here because of the quality of the instruction and credentials of the teacher.  We think that Ben Hogan's little book would make a great gift for the budding golfer, or an invaluable addition to your own library.
