The Keys to the Effortless Golf Swing: Curing Your Hit Impulse in Seven Simple Lessons covers the most important aspect of playing golf: hitting the ball. This seemingly simple action can sometimes become the focus for great frustration and create a barrier between you and an enjoyable game...and a good score. The Keys to the Effortless Golf Swing breaks down the swing into its basic essential elements and walks you through seven simple steps towards improvement.

The introduction includes some relaxation techniques and explains why this is necessary and probably the most important skill you can learn to improve your swing.  McTeigue explains why relaxation is so important by showing examples of how muscle tension can provide poor results.  He says that many golfers find they can manage a wonderful practice swing, but as soon as they are faced with the ball they tense up and it all goes wrong.  This is because they are visualising hitting the ball, which can be counter-productive.  He says: "Helping you overcome this hit instinct, and creating and maintaining the ideal sequence of motion in your swing, is the major theme and objective of this book."

At $14.99 it is not the cheapest of the paperbacks, nor the longest.  There is a companion video to the book (paid for separately), which provides a useful visual aid.  Despite the higher price, you should find something to be gained from Michael McTeigue's teaching methods.  McTeigue is a professional golf teacher and has been a member of the US Professional Golfer's Association for over nineteen years.  He has taught professional golf at Riviera Country Club, and San Francisco Golf Club and served as Head Golf Professional at Palos Verdes Country Club. McTeigue has been well published in GOLF Magazine, including articles and two instruction series',  "The X Factor" and "Science of the Swing. The Keys to the Effortless Golf Swing and companion video (paid for separately)  were highly recommended in GOLF Magazine and have been widely praised by readers.

Readers have found the way the book builds up technique step-by-step to be useful, encouraging mastery of each aspect before moving onto the next "layer" of the movement.  There are early exercises without the club, which are easy to do in the home. This should ensure you build up a solid technique that becomes second nature because it is broken down into simple steps towards a goal.  The step-by-step approach helps build confidence and because you can refer back to the book or video you can take learning at your own pace. Every golfer wants to improve, whatever their level so The Keys to the Effortless Golf Swing has something for everyone.
